Guide for local admins
Last Updated 2 years ago

This guide is for local admins of the email hosting services offered by GEWIS. For more details about those services, please see What email hosting services does GEWIS offer for fraternities or committees?

If you are a local admin, you can sign in on https://mail.gewis.nl. You can use your AD account to sign in. If you append @gewis.nl to your username, you will be able to manage your own account. If you enter your username without @gewis.nl, the admin interface will open.

Domain settings

The first page that opens, is the domain settings page. Local admins see all the domains that they have been granted at least some permissions on.
The most important things shown on this page, are the counters. Here you can see how many more mailboxes and aliases you can create and how much storage you have left to divide. These counters are set since running a mail server is not free and can be altered in cooperation with the CBC and the board.

Mailboxes

Mailboxes are email addresses with associated accounts. One can sign in to such an account and send email from it.
On this tab, the local admin can create, update, disable or delete mailboxes. Local admins cannot sign in to mailboxes directly, but are able to reset passwords in case a user forgot their password.
If a user wants to forward emails, they can set their forwards in the SOGo web interface.

Usually, you only want to create mailboxes for people that don't have an m-account as other people already have accounts on the server and can simply use an alias to their existing mailbox.

Mail aliases

Mail aliases are addresses which are not associated with storage or a login. Instead, they forward email to another address (either a mailbox on the server, a mail alias on the server or an external address). They can also forward to multiple addresses (for simple mailing lists).
Setting the destination of a mail alias to a mailbox on the server allows that mailbox to send mail from the aliases address. If you create the alias firstname@demodispuut.nl and redirect it to m1234@gewis.nl, m1234 will be able to set the sender of their email to firstname@demodispuut.nl.

If users don't know how to send email from firstname@demodispuut.nl, refer them to https://support.gewis.nl/kb/faq.php?id=35
