Frequently Asked Question
How do I access files from my own Windows computer using SMB?
Last Updated 3 years ago
It is possible to open the GEWIS network shares on your own Windows computer. The process for this is fairly straightforward.
Please keep in mind that for security reasons, you need to be on the TU/e network (either physically or through the VPN).
To use SMB, a stable low-latency internet connection is needed. If you do not have such a connection, please use SFTP to connect to the fileserver.
Opening a GEWIS network share (single use)
To open a folder only once, the process is straightforward.
- First, open Windows Explorer
- Enter "\\files01.gewis.nl" into the address bar of the file explorer
- Enter your GEWIS credentials into the popup. Prepend your username with "GEWISWG\" to let your computer know that you want to use a GEWIS account and not a local or TU/e account.
- Double click the network share you want to open. For datas, select the subfolder you want to open. For homes, double click the folder with your username.
Adding a network share as a drive
It is also possible to mount the fileserver as a drive as is done on the GEWIS computers.
- First, open Windows Explorer
- Click "Map a network drive"
- To mount all file shared, enter "\\files01.gewis.nl\datas"
To mount your own profile, enter "\\files01.gewis.nl\homes\m1234" replacing m1234 with your username
Optionally, alter the drive letter that will be mounted to. Make sure to select "Connect using different credentials" - Enter your GEWIS credentials into the popup. Prepend your username with "GEWISWG\" to let your computer know that you want to use a GEWIS account and not a local or TU/e account.
Check the box to remember your credentials if you also selected "Reconnect at sign-in".
