Frequently Asked Question

Why did the outgoing spam filter block the email I wanted to send?
Last Updated 3 years ago

My message was blocked by mail.gewis.nl

The SMTP server probably told you, but you can always ask us why your message was blocked. Please note that it is unlikely that we can do anything for you. If we would let the message pass, recipients will file it into spam anyway and that harms the reputation of GEWIS and the TU/e.

My message was blocked by the TU/e mailserver (ending in .tue.nl)

The TU/e mail server determined your message was spam. Please do not try to send it again. Again, note that it is unlikely that we can do anything for you. If IMS would let the message pass, recipients will probably mark it as spam in any case. Sending spam harms the mail reputation of the TU/e.

My message was blocked by Microsoft Exchange Online

This can have two causes. You will see a code in the response:

  • MALW: You were trying to send malware. If you did not, please contact us immediately
  • OSPM: You were trying to send a spam message. Please make your message look less like spam before you try to resend it.
  • BULK: You were trying to send a lot of messages. Please review this KB article.

My message was blocked by the recipient

Did you receive a notification that your message was blocked? Please forward it to postmaster@gewis.nl. This may indicate that DMARC/DKIM/SPF don't work properly.

Did your message end up in the spam folder of the recipient? Ask them to unmark it as spam. If you doubt about the contents, this website has a built-in spam analyzer which may tell you why it was blocked.
