Frequently Asked Question
The GEWIS boardroom is equipped with 10 computers and while MF3.150 is a very nice place to be, sometimes you want to use a computer in that room from a distance. And sometimes corona visits and you'll have to work from home.
The following people can connect to physical workstations remotely (e.g. pcgewis1.gewiswg.gewis.nl):
- Current CBC members
To reduce the usage of the physical PCs by remote users, a server has been installed which accepts multiple connections at once. If you previously held permissions to remote to physical workstations, those permissions have been converted to permissions for GEWISVDESKTOP.gewis.nl. The following people can use this server:
- Current & former board members
- Current & former CBC members
- Members of GEFLITST
- Members of GSM
- Members of SNiC 2022
- Members of Stijl
- Members of Supremum
- Members of YBC21
- Treasurer of the introductionweek committee¹
- Treasurer of the BAC¹
- Members of KKK21
- Members of KKK22
¹This includes the former treasurers as long as the yearly report has not been approved at the GMM.
Are you in this list and you cannot access the server, please contact the CBC.
Are you not in this list, but do you want access, please contact the board.
Connection to the network
For security reasons, you cannot connect directly to GEWIS computers from your home computer, but you have to connect to the TU/e network first.
Your IP should be withing TUENET1 (184.108.40.206/16) to connect. Both the external IP range TUENET2 (220.127.116.11/20) and the network of the Department of Electrical Engineering (18.104.22.168/22) are not allowed.
Please connect to either tue-wpa2 or eduroam to make sure you are in the allowed IP-range. Your IP should be within the aforementioned IP ranges. If your IP starts with 145.116, you are likely connected to the guest network. Please try switching networks. You can directly connect to the hostname of the computer.
Using the VPN (recommended)
If you are a TU/e student, then this is the easiest route to connect to the network of the university.
Simply follow the instructions on https://intranet.tue.nl/index.php?id=17317 (or https://intranet.tue.nl/index.php?id=5131). After that, simply connect to the hostname of the computer.
You can tunnel all traffic through the VPN (what the guide does), or you can do split tunneling. In those cases make sure to tunnel (e.g. using Add-VpnConnectionRoute on Windows) the range the TU/e nameservers are in (22.214.171.124/23), the range the TU/e domain controllers are in (126.96.36.199/23), as well as the range the M&CS computers are in (188.8.131.52/22).
Using a Remote Desktop Gateway (recommended)
These instrucions work for both TU/e students as non-TU/e students. However, not all remote desktop software supports using remote desktop gateways.¹ Simply specifying "gewisvdesktop.gewis.nl" as your RD Gateway should work. You can use the same credentials for the gateway as for the logon session.
¹All software recommended at the bottom of this page supports the use of Remote Desktop Gateways.
Using an SSH tunnel
If you are not a TU/e student, you cannot use the VPN. In those cases, or if you do not want to tunnel all your traffic through the VPN, you can use a TCP tunnel over SSH. This tunnels the traffic first through the GEWIS server and then to the computer.
Simply use the command below to set up the tunnel. Make sure to replace pcgewis4 with the name of the computer you want to connect to and username with your username¹. This command does not give any feedback if the connection was successful.
ssh -N -L 4444:gewisvdesktop.gewis.nl:3389 email@example.com
After setting up the connection, you can RDP to "localhost:4444" (or any other port if you chose some different port).
¹This is your username on the GEWIS server. You don't need to use the same account for the tunnel as for the remote desktop connection.
Remote desktop connection
After you have connected to the network, you can use your favourite client that supports the Microsoft Remote Desktop protocol to connect to a GEWIS computer.
If you are using an SSH tunnel, remember to use the hostname "localhost" with the port you specified. In all other cases, connect to the direct hostname such as "gewisvdesktop.gewis.nl" without specifying a port.
If you have permissions to remote to physical workstations, please check https://info.gewis.nl to see which computers are available.
- On Windows you most likely want to use "mstsc.exe" (Remote Desktop Connection or Verbinding met extern bureaublad)
- On Linux, Remmina is confirmed to work and is included with some major distributions and can be build on others. Other tools may work, but if you use Linux, you probably also know where to find them
- TU/e Ubuntu installations come with Vinagre.If you use such an installation, you can also use this to remote desktop. It has a built-in feature for SSH tunnels
- On Mac, you most likely ant to use Microsoft Remote Desktop for macOS
- On Android, you most likely want to use Microsoft RD Client for Android 8 and later (or if you are using an older Android version Microsoft Remote Desktop)
- On iOS, the app you have to use is Microsoft Remote Desktop Mobile for iOS
